Kolkata: Speaking to local audiences in Kolkata, China’s Consul General Xu Wei highlighted China’s recent economic achievements and the growing scope for cooperation with India. Returning from a home visit to China, Xu shared insights from Shanghai and Suzhou, emphasizing opportunities for Indian businesses and travelers.
In Shanghai, Xu Wei noted rapid progress in finance, trade, shipping, and technological innovation. The city’s GDP exceeded 5.39 trillion yuan in 2024, surpassing that of several countries. Green infrastructure and widespread adoption of new energy vehicles reflect China’s commitment to sustainable growth. He stressed that Shanghai’s openness and innovation provide ample opportunities for Indian investors and companies seeking partnerships.

Suzhou, a key industrial hub near Shanghai, has strengthened its trade links with India, with bilateral trade reaching US$10.16 billion in 2024—a 15.5% year-on-year increase. Indian companies, including Kunshan Rotam Reddy Pharmaceuticals, are actively investing in the city, while many Chinese firms have also invested in India. Xu highlighted Suzhou as an example of mutual growth through global supply chains.
Xu Wei also detailed China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) achievements, including steady GDP growth, rising life expectancy, leadership in renewable energy, and global dominance in new energy vehicle production. He emphasized China’s continued commitment to opening markets and fostering trade.
Addressing India-China relations, Xu noted that bilateral trade this year has already reached US$115.2 billion. He welcomed India’s reopening of tourist visas for Chinese citizens and the resumption of direct flights, including Indigo’s new Kolkata-Guangzhou route. Xu expressed optimism that strengthened business, cultural, and tourism exchanges will bring shared benefits, describing the “dragon-elephant tango” as a symbol of long-term cooperation and mutual prosperity.
