By a Staff Reporter: Valentina Petrillo, a 50-year-old Italian transgender athlete. The 50-year-old transgender athlete is participating in the Paralympics for the first time. She is participating in the T12 200m and 400m events in Paris this time. But even that participation has already seen controversy.
Spanish lawyer Irene Aguirre brought this issue forward in the selection phase. And that too when Petrillo beat Spanish athlete Melanie Burgess in that event. Aguirre claims that Petrillo was unfairly added to the event. And that's when her transgender issue came up.
However, IPC president Andrew Parsons welcomed Petrillo's inclusion. If the Spanish lawyer's claim is not taken seriously for now, the first transgender athlete will make history at this year's Paralympics.
