In a recent interview, Zoho CEO and Co-founder Sridhar Vembu addressed the pressing issue of workplace stress, highlighting the challenges faced by employees in today's fast-paced work environment. He expressed concern about the long-term sustainability of companies that push their employees excessively hard, stating, "I don't believe any company pushing employees very, very hard can sustain that thing long term, that type of pace."

Vembu pointed out that many young professionals are moving from smaller towns to big cities, where they often encounter feelings of loneliness upon entering the workforce. "The first problem is, of course, loneliness. They come into the workforce lonely. And we see this problem ourselves. We have encountered this," he explained, emphasizing the emotional toll this transition can take on individuals.

Additionally, he highlighted the growing issue of long commutes, particularly in metropolitan areas like Bengaluru, where 1-2 hour commutes are becoming increasingly common. "Commute, and 1-2 hour commutes are now becoming increasingly the norm in our cities, Bengaluru is a classic example," he noted, illustrating how these factors contribute to employee stress.

Vembu elaborated on the cumulative effects of loneliness, long commutes, and work pressure, describing the situation as a "very big pressure cooker." He lamented the tragic outcomes, stating, "some people break, other people are broken," underscoring the severe impact of these challenges on individuals’ mental health and well-being.

To address these issues, Vembu advocates for a more geographically diversified approach to business operations. "We have to diversify geographically more. Every activity shouldn't be in one place," he stated, calling for a rethinking of how companies can structure their work environments to foster healthier workplaces. His insights highlight the need for companies to adopt more holistic approaches to employee well-being and sustainable growth.
