Delhi: The rising water level of the Yamuna river has begun entering the Nigambodh Ghat cremation ground, one of the oldest and busiest in the national capital, officials said on Wednesday. The development has raised concerns about the continuation of cremation services at the site.

According to officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), floodwater has already seeped into parts of the ghat premises. If the water level rises further, operations may have to be temporarily suspended to ensure safety and prevent damage to facilities. “The situation is being closely monitored. A decision on closure will be taken depending on the water level in the coming hours,” an MCD official said.

The Nigambodh Ghat, located along the banks of the Yamuna, handles a significant number of cremations daily and holds historical and cultural importance. Authorities are also assessing alternative arrangements in case the site becomes unusable for an extended period.
