Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 — Marking a major milestone in India’s maritime infrastructure, the world’s largest container ship, MSC Irina, began the berthing process today at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala’s capital city. The port, developed and operated by the Adani Group, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, and is poised to become a key transshipment hub in South Asia.
The arrival of MSC Irina — a vessel of unprecedented scale in the global shipping industry — signals Vizhinjam's readiness to handle Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), boosting India’s profile in global maritime logistics. Port officials described the berthing operation as “smooth and historic,” reflecting months of preparation to ensure the port's deep-draft capabilities and infrastructure met international standards.
