New Delhi: Indian Railways has witnessed a significant increase in the participation of women employees, rising from 6.6% in 2014 to over 8.2% in 2024, said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of the Information and Publicity Department, Railway Board.

"Our total workforce is around 12.3 lakh, with more than 1.13 lakh women employees. Their participation in all posts is continuously increasing," he stated.

On International Women’s Day, Indian Railways launched several initiatives to honor women employees. In Mumbai, a Vande Bharat Express was operated entirely by women staff, while in Gorakhpur, the central panel was managed by women.

Highlighting women-led railway stations, Kumar mentioned Matunga station in Maharashtra and Gandhinagar station as key examples of year-round operations managed by women. "Women are driving the wheel of development, and we encourage more of them to join Indian Railways and contribute to the nation’s progress," he added.
