Delhi: Union Minister Jitendra Singh, speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday, praised the institution for its enduring role in strengthening the administrative foundation of India. Reflecting on the legacy of the civil services, he said that while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had once described them as the “steel frame of governance”, it was the UPSC that ensured the strength and integrity of that framework over the decades.

The minister noted that UPSC has carried forward its responsibilities with neutrality, credibility and continuity, making it one of the most respected institutions in the country. By maintaining rigorous standards of merit-based selection, Singh said, the commission has ensured that only the most capable individuals enter the administrative machinery.

He further highlighted that UPSC’s century-long journey stands as a testament to India’s commitment to institutional framework, transparency in recruitment and the preservation of democratic ideals. The celebrations also provided space for reflection on how evolving governance challenges require newer competencies, ethical leadership and technological adaptability in civil services.
