New Delhi: In the wake of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's passing, a dispute has emerged between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress regarding the establishment of a memorial in his honor. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has accused the Congress party of politicizing the issue, stating that the government had already intended to form a trust to oversee the creation of the memorial.
"The Congress should not have done politics on this," Meghwal remarked. "The government said that a trust would be formed. When did the government disagree? The Congress wants to create a controversy in everything... This is not the right opportunity chosen by them to create a controversy."
The controversy intensified following the government's decision to hold Dr. Singh's last rites at Nigambodh Ghat, rather than at a dedicated site for state funerals. Congress leaders have expressed dissatisfaction, interpreting this choice as a sign of disrespect towards the late Prime Minister. They argue that Dr. Singh's contributions to the nation warrant the highest honors, including a memorial befitting his stature.
In response, the government has maintained that all appropriate protocols were followed and that plans for a memorial are underway. Meghwal emphasized that the formation of a trust is a standard procedure for establishing memorials for distinguished leaders and that the Congress party's allegations are unfounded.
