By A Staff Reporter: During the FSSAI Global Food Regulators Summit 2024 in Delhi, Union Minister JP Nadda underscored the significant risks posed by pesticide residues in food, emphasizing the necessity for global action. While acknowledging India’s strides in promoting organic farming and alternative pest control methods, he called for more widespread adoption of these practices worldwide.
Nadda also addressed the critical issue of plastic waste, which constitutes 80% of marine pollution. He referenced recent reports indicating the alarming presence of microplastics in human bodies, highlighting an urgent need for effective solutions. The minister noted India’s initiatives in developing eco-friendly packaging solutions as essential for mitigating environmental impact while ensuring these alternatives prioritize health safety.
In a move to bolster research across various sectors, including food safety, the Government of India announced the establishment of the National Research Foundation, with a substantial budget of approximately $5.96 billion allocated for the years 2024 to 2028. This initiative aims to enhance research capabilities and foster innovation in food safety and related areas, ultimately contributing to healthier and safer food systems.
