New Delhi: Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw attended a high-profile OpenAI event alongside the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, where he outlined India’s ambitious plans under the IndiaAI Mission. Speaking to a diverse audience of tech leaders, researchers, and startups, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s commitment to democratizing technology and fostering a robust AI ecosystem.
“Our Prime Minister always says that we must democratize technology, so we are very much focused on making technology accessible to everybody,” Vaishnaw stated in response to a query about the IndiaAI Mission. He highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure that development opportunities are widely available to startups and researchers across the nation. “We want to make the development opportunities available to a very large number of startups and ecosystem researchers,” he added.
Vaishnaw detailed the multi-layered approach of the IndiaAI Mission, indicating that the government’s efforts will span across three critical levels: chip design, foundational AI models, and application development. “In our case, in the IndiaAI Mission, we will be working on all the three layers—at the chip design level, at the foundational level where we will collaborate very actively with OpenAI, and at the application layer,” he explained.
A key component of India’s AI initiative involves the creation of localized datasets tailored to the Indian context, which will be used to train AI models effectively. “We are creating certain very good data sets which will be used for training the models in the Indian context,” Vaishnaw noted, emphasizing the importance of developing AI technologies that are sensitive to India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.
