Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the start of construction for a major semiconductor plant in Morigaon, Assam, approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 29, 2024. The plant, set up by Tata's Electronics company, marks a significant milestone in India's semiconductor industry.

"This unit will be established with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and is expected to generate 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs," Vaishnaw stated. He emphasized the scale of the project, which will manufacture approximately 4.83 crore chips per day.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the construction site to mark the beginning of this significant venture. Vaishnaw highlighted the uniqueness of the plant, noting, "All three major technologies deployed in this plant are developed in India."

The chips produced at this facility will be crucial for electric vehicles and communication and network infrastructure, ensuring widespread usage across various large companies.
