In a major infrastructural boost for Chennai, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the Union Cabinet's approval of Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro, which will be developed at a projected cost of ₹63,246 crore. This expansion will significantly enhance the metro network in one of India's fastest-growing cities and a key economic hub.
The 119-kilometer project will be divided into three corridors and feature a total of 120 stations, designed to ensure that metro services are within walking distance for most residents. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of accessibility in urban transportation, drawing comparisons with global cities like Tokyo, where metro stations are easily accessible from virtually any location.
"The aim is for more people to have access to metro stations close to their homes, making public transport more convenient and efficient," said Vaishnaw. He further highlighted how this expansion will serve to support Chennai’s rapid urban growth while relieving pressure on the city's road networks.
The completion of this phase is expected to revolutionize mobility within the city, providing Chennai residents with a sustainable and efficient public transport option. The project is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve urban infrastructure in major metropolitan areas across India.
