The Union Cabinet has approved four multitracking projects for Indian Railways, aiming to boost infrastructure, increase operational efficiency, and ease congestion on key routes. The projects will cumulatively cover approximately 574 kilometers and span 13 districts across six states—Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
Announcing the decision on social media, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the approvals were granted under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These projects form part of a larger push to expand and modernize the national railway network to support growing freight and passenger traffic.
The specific routes and districts involved have not yet been detailed by the government, but the expansion is expected to significantly improve mobility in eastern and central India, where many of the lines are heavily saturated. Multitracking, which involves adding more railway lines to existing single or double-track corridors, is seen as a strategic intervention to enhance train frequency and reduce delays.
