New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Copra for the upcoming 2025 season. The decision is seen as part of the government’s continued efforts to improve the welfare of farmers and support the agricultural sector.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking on the development, said, “A series of decisions have been taken for the welfare of farmers. It reflects our commitment, the Prime Minister’s commitment towards improving the lives of farmers.”

Highlighting regional contributions, Vaishnaw noted, “In our country, Karnataka has the highest share of Copra production.” He further explained the framework for procurement, which will involve both central and state agencies.

“For procurement of Copra, both NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) and NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers' Federation) will be the central nodal agencies. Apart from this, the state governments will have a big role in it, so this procurement will be done with the cooperation of the state government corporations,” the minister added.

The announcement aims to provide a financial safety net to coconut farmers, ensuring fair remuneration and boosting the sector's resilience. Karnataka, with its dominant share in Copra production, is expected to benefit significantly from the measure.

The move aligns with the government’s broader strategy of empowering the agricultural community and reinforcing India’s self-reliance in essential commodities.
