Delhi: Congress leader Udit Raj has cast doubts on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reported readiness to lead the opposition INDIA alliance, questioning her ability to succeed on a national level.

Referring to the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) past attempts at expanding its presence beyond West Bengal, Raj said, “When TMC won (in West Bengal), TMC tried to expand their network all over the country. They struggled a lot, but to what extent they succeeded? From that, it is understood that the one who couldn't extend her party outside Bengal, how will she fight on a national level? How can she lead?”

The comments come amid ongoing discussions within the INDIA alliance, a coalition of opposition parties aiming to present a united front against the ruling BJP in the upcoming elections. Mamata Banerjee’s leadership has been a topic of debate, with some allies supporting her as a potential leader while others remain skeptical of her national reach.

Udit Raj’s critique underscores the internal differences within the alliance regarding leadership roles. While Mamata Banerjee remains a prominent figure in Indian politics, particularly for her influence in Bengal, questions about her ability to lead a diverse coalition at the national level persist.

The INDIA alliance continues to deliberate on its strategies and leadership framework as it gears up for a critical electoral battle. Mamata Banerjee’s reported statement and the ensuing reactions highlight the complexities of coalition politics in India.
