New Delhi: Congress leader Udit Raj on Friday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that the Congress had once taxed even children’s toffees. Raj alleged that such statements distract from the country’s pressing economic challenges, including unemployment and the flight of wealthy citizens abroad.
“His job is to lie. Overall, we see why the condition of India’s economy is so poor. The wealthy community is leaving the country. If the GDP is good, then where are the jobs? Today, for one post, 50,000 people are applying. There is massive unemployment,” Raj said while reacting to the Prime Minister’s comments.
The Prime Minister, addressing a public meeting earlier this week, had accused the Congress of burdening people with excessive taxes in the past, drawing attention to items of daily use such as sweets. The remark has sparked continued criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that it oversimplifies the larger debate on taxation and economic policy.
Raj’s response adds to the Congress’s broader attack on the government over economic indicators. While the Centre has projected strong GDP growth and positioned India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, the opposition has repeatedly pointed to rising unemployment, inequality, and cost of living as major concerns for ordinary citizens.
