Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday criticised the Maharashtra government for failing to appoint Leaders of Opposition (LoPs) in both Houses of the state legislature even after more than a year. Speaking ahead of the Winter Session, Thackeray said the absence of duly designated LoPs undermines democratic functioning and weakens legislative accountability.

“It has been over a year since the post of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly has remained vacant. This should not continue,” he said, demanding that the government announce LoPs for both the Assembly and the Council in the upcoming session. He argued that without recognised opposition leadership, crucial debates and checks on the executive remain compromised.

Thackeray also raised concerns about alleged irregularities in Maharashtra’s electoral rolls, describing the situation as a “mess” that threatens the integrity of future elections. He urged the Supreme Court to urgently take up the issue, claiming that large-scale errors and omissions in the voters’ list could disenfranchise citizens or distort electoral outcomes.
