Velu Nachiyar, popularly known as Veera Mangai (valorous lady), ruled the Sivaganga estate in the 18th century and is remembered for her resistance against British colonial forces. She is celebrated for her strategic acumen and courage, having waged war against the British nearly a century before the 1857 uprising, often considered the first war of independence.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted Velu Nachiyar’s pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and emphasized the importance of remembering women leaders who laid the foundation of resistance against colonial rule. He noted that her story continues to inspire generations and stands as a symbol of bravery and patriotism.
