Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Saturday strongly criticised the BJP following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks, alleging that the ruling party at the Centre is exerting political pressure on the Election Commission ahead of the upcoming polls.
Responding to Shah’s comments, Ghosh said the current situation surrounding voter verification and list revisions is being driven by political motives. “After the SIR happened in 2001, it took two years. Now elections are coming. Now, motivated by politics, they are pressuring the Election Commission,” he said, referring to the Special Summary Revision (SSR) process.
He further alleged that the intense scrutiny and verification pressures have created distress among citizens and officials alike. “Real voters are committing suicide under pressure, BLOs are committing suicide,” Ghosh claimed, adding that the environment has become deeply unsettling for those involved in the electoral process.
Accusing the BJP of using institutions for partisan gains, he said, “By misusing the Election Commission, the BJP is fulfilling its political agenda.” Ghosh emphasised that the TMC wants a fair, transparent process that protects genuine voters while removing ineligible ones. “We want that not a single real voter faces any trouble and not a single real voter’s name is removed from the voter list, and not a single illegal voter’s name remains,” he added.
