With Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to visit Manipur on September 13, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee criticised the timing of the visit, questioning why it had not taken place earlier during the state’s prolonged unrest.
Speaking on Wednesday, Banerjee said the Prime Minister should have engaged directly with the people of Manipur at the height of the crisis, describing it as his responsibility to intervene and restore peace. “He should have gone to Manipur. He should have talked to people there. I feel, as a PM, when Manipur is burning, it is his duty to visit, bring normalcy there,” Banerjee remarked.
The TMC leader further added that Modi’s upcoming visit comes only after two years of turmoil and coincides with an approaching election cycle. “It’s okay if he is going after two years. Now when the people will have to vote, they will decide what is best in interest of Manipur,” he said.
