New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kirti Azad has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its push for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand, calling it a "gimmick." Azad, a former cricketer and vocal politician, questioned why the BJP was focusing on UCC in Uttarakhand when it had failed to implement such a policy elsewhere in the country.
“It’s a gimmick; the BJP has been talking about it for a very long time, and why is it only in Uttarakhand? They have not been able to do it anywhere else in the country,” Azad remarked, casting doubt on the BJP's commitment to enacting the law.
The BJP has been advocating for the UCC as part of its broader agenda of national integration and uniformity in personal laws, but the proposal has faced strong opposition from various political and religious groups. Azad further stated, "The central government should take a call on this, but they only talk about it, and nothing is going to happen."
The MP from Bihar added that issues like the UCC and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are often raised by the BJP during election campaigns but are conveniently sidelined once the elections are over. "All these things, UCC and CAA, come up during the elections and they forget about it,"he said.
