Hyderabad, January 4 — In response to recent concerns, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Director of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOH&FW), Government of India, issued a statement on January 3, 2025, addressing the prevalence of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV). According to the statement, hMPV is a respiratory virus similar to other viruses that cause common cold and flu-like symptoms, especially during the winter season. It is particularly common among younger and older age groups.
As of now, the Health Department of Telangana has confirmed that no cases of hMPV have been reported in the state. The department has also reviewed data on respiratory infections across Telangana, noting that there has been no substantial increase in cases during December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This analysis has reassured the public that the current respiratory illness situation is under control.
Despite the absence of hMPV cases in the state, the Health Department has recommended precautionary measures to minimize the risk of respiratory infections. Citizens have been urged to follow a set of guidelines, including maintaining good hygiene, wearing masks in crowded places, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing flu-like symptoms.
The Health Department's proactive stance aims to safeguard public health and prevent any potential surge in respiratory infections as the winter season progresses. Public health authorities have reiterated the importance of remaining vigilant and following the recommended practices to keep infections at bay.
