Delhi: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya launched a sharp attack on the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday, alleging that the arrests of BJP and opposition leaders in the state reflect “undemocratic tendencies” within the ruling DMK. Speaking to the media, Surya claimed that the state administration was using intimidation tactics to silence those raising “legitimate questions” about governance and law and order.
Referring to the recent detentions of BJP workers and other opposition voices, Surya said the actions were reminiscent of “earlier communist regimes,” drawing a pointed comparison to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s namesake, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. “The undemocratic arrests of BJP and opposition leaders of Tamil Nadu speak of the undemocratic tendencies of the DMK,” he said.
He accused the state government of disregarding court directions, particularly in relation to orders permitting devotees to light traditional lamps during religious observances. “Despite the Court orders allowing the devotees to light the lamp, the state government in Tamil Nadu is not facilitating the Court order,” Surya alleged, calling it a deliberate attempt to curb religious freedoms.
With Tamil Nadu heading towards its 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP MP asserted that public sentiment is shifting. He said voters are increasingly disillusioned with what he described as the DMK’s “fascist governance style,” and predicted that people are “determined to boot out this undemocratic government and bring in change.”
