CHENNAI — Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday assured residents that safety measures around Chembarambakkam Lake have been strengthened to prevent flooding during the ongoing North East monsoon.
Speaking to the media, Subramanian recalled past incidents during the AIADMK regime in 2005 and 2015, when the lake was opened without proper warnings, causing significant damage to settlements along the riverbanks. “During the AIADMK regime, the Chembarambakkam Lake was opened without proper warning, which caused severe damage to the settlements along the riverbanks,” he said.
He emphasized that under the current government, the Chief Minister personally monitors the inflow and outflow levels of the lake daily. “Over the last four years, we have ensured that people are informed promptly. Even if the inflow rises to 10,000 cubic feet per second, there will be no damage; the embankments have been strengthened to handle that capacity,” Subramanian said.
The minister also highlighted that special camps have been set up in vulnerable areas to provide assistance if required and that these will be expanded after the rain spell subsides. He assured that “people will be protected, and no harm will come to them,” reflecting the state government’s proactive approach toward flood management during the monsoon season.
