Chennai: In a significant push towards sustainable urban mobility, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed Electric Bus Depot at Vyasarpadi, Chennai. The depot, developed by the state’s Transport Department through the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), was built at a cost of ₹47.50 crore.
The inauguration ceremony, held at Vyasarpadi, was attended by senior government officials, MTC personnel, and local dignitaries. The new facility is expected to serve as a key operational hub for electric buses in the northern part of Chennai, supporting maintenance, charging, and dispatch services.
As part of the same event, CM Stalin flagged off 120 new electric buses under Phase I of MTC’s electric mobility initiative. These buses, introduced at a total cost of ₹207.90 crore, are expected to significantly reduce urban air pollution and improve commuter convenience in the city.
Speaking at the function, CM Stalin reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustainable public transport solutions. “The introduction of electric buses and infrastructure is a step towards a greener, healthier future for Chennai and Tamil Nadu,” he said.
