New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain petitions seeking criminal action against Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his controversial statement in September 2023, calling for the “eradication of Sanatan Dharma.” The apex court noted that multiple FIRs have already been filed against Stalin over the remark and directed the petitioners to pursue legal remedies at the appropriate forums.
The remark, which drew sharp criticism from political and religious groups across the country, has been the subject of heated debates and legal challenges. Several individuals and organizations had approached the Supreme Court, demanding stringent action against Stalin, arguing that his statement was inflammatory and hurt religious sentiments.
However, the Supreme Court bench declined to intervene, stating, "We see no reason to entertain these petitions as the matter is already being addressed through multiple FIRs and existing legal mechanisms."
Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is a prominent leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, made the remark during a public event, claiming that Sanatan Dharma promotes social inequality and must be eradicated. The comment sparked nationwide outrage, with opposition parties accusing Stalin of disrespecting religious traditions and sentiments.
