Delhi: Congress leader SS Randhawa on Tuesday suggested that a memorial be established in honor of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, calling him “an institution in himself.” Speaking to reporters, Randhawa proposed an international-level college of economics as a fitting tribute to Singh’s legacy, emphasizing his global recognition as an economist and statesman.
“Dr. Manmohan Singh was an institution in himself. A memorial should be made for him. As a tribute to him, an international-level college of economics should also be established,” Randhawa said, lauding Singh’s contributions to India’s economic reforms and development.
The Congress leader also raised questions about the current government’s emphasis on Veer Savarkar in India's freedom struggle. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming event to lay the foundation stone for Delhi University's Veer Savarkar College, Randhawa asked, “Did only one person work for the independence of India? Why have the names of so many others been forgotten?”
Randhawa’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates about the BJP government’s focus on Savarkar, a polarizing figure in India’s history. While supporters hail Savarkar as a freedom fighter and visionary, critics argue that his role has been overstated at the expense of other leaders who played significant roles in the independence movement.
