Mumbai, Maharashtra: Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra President Abu Asim Azmi on Tuesday levelled serious allegations against the government over the ongoing Special Summary Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, claiming that the exercise is being used to selectively remove voters belonging to Dalit and minority communities.

Speaking to the media, Azmi said the revision process had raised concerns across several constituencies, where citizens reported that their names had been unexpectedly struck off the rolls. “It is easier for them to delete the names of the people through SIR. They are specially targeting the Dalits and the minorities of this nation,” he claimed.

While acknowledging that legitimate discrepancies in voter lists should indeed be corrected, Azmi argued that the scale of deletions this year far exceeds what can be justified as routine updating. “Wherever there is any discrepancy in the votes, it should be removed,” he said. “But they have deleted the names of so many people in the SIR that it is difficult to have a fair election.”
