New Delhi: Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan has strongly opposed the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' bill, raising concerns over its implications for India's federal structure, political diversity, and grassroots democracy. Speaking on the matter in Parliament, Hasan emphasized that the bill disregards the nation's rich diversity and could undermine smaller political parties and local governance.

"It is very regretful that by forgetting the diversity of the country, this bill is being introduced. This will have a big impact on our country's basic structure and federalism," said Hasan. She warned that the initiative could centralize power and marginalize smaller parties, reducing their ability to represent regional and minority voices.

Hasan also expressed fears about how the focus on larger national issues during simultaneous elections might eclipse smaller, localized concerns that directly affect citizens' daily lives. "I feel that the small issues that affect common people's lives will be overshadowed by big issues," she stated.

The 'One Nation, One Election' proposal has sparked intense debates across party lines, with supporters touting its potential to streamline governance and reduce election costs, while critics like Hasan argue that it poses serious risks to India’s federal and democratic fabric. "We are totally against this," she concluded, reaffirming the Samajwadi Party's stance.
