Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a major tribute initiative to honour two of the state’s iconic freedom fighters—Kittur Rani Channamma and Sangolli Rayanna. The Chief Minister made the announcement during a public programme, highlighting their contributions in resisting British colonial rule and pledging 110 acres of land to commemorate their legacy.
Calling it a solemn tribute, Siddaramaiah recalled the valour of Channamma, who led two armed uprisings against the British in the early 19th century. “She won the first war and was captured in the second. Her army included people from all castes,” he said, underlining the unity in resistance during her leadership.
He also paid homage to Sangolli Rayanna, a key commander and trusted aide of Channamma, who continued the fight after her capture. Rayanna was ultimately arrested and sentenced to death in 1831 for his defiance against British rule. “Rayanna – Channamma’s right hand – fought bravely and was sentenced to death in court,” Siddaramaiah said.
