New Delhi: Reacting strongly to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reported remarks following the Durgapur gang rape case, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla on Sunday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of shielding criminals and failing to protect women in the state.
“The Durgapur incident is deeply unfortunate. But instead of expressing regret, Mamata Banerjee has asked, ‘Why did the girl go out late at night?’ This reflects a shameful and insensitive mindset,” Poonawalla said, condemning the Chief Minister’s response.
He further alleged that under the TMC regime, West Bengal has become unsafe for women. “In Bengal, no mother, no woman, no person, and not even an MP is safe. Only criminals, rapists, and jihadis are safe,” he said.
Poonawalla accused the state government of prioritising the protection of perpetrators over victims, calling the Durgapur case “another example of the TMC’s moral and administrative failure.”
