New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shatrughan Sinha came out in support of Rahul Gandhi following his sharp critique of the government in Parliament, asserting that Gandhi, as the Leader of Opposition (LoP), has the right to voice strong criticisms.
“Regarding criticizing the government, he (Rahul Gandhi) is the LoP. People have high expectations from him, especially in Parliament. Outside Parliament too, Rahul Gandhi has emerged as a national youth icon, which is unprecedented,” Sinha said, defending Gandhi’s position in the ongoing political discourse.
Gandhi’s remarks in Parliament were notably forceful, with the Congress leader raising concerns about various issues affecting the nation. Despite the aggression in his speech, Sinha emphasized that Gandhi’s critique was aimed at addressing systemic issues and was not directed at any individual or party. “Today, the points he raised in Parliament were expressed with a lot of aggression, but he did not target anyone specifically,” Sinha noted.
Sinha’s comments reflect his belief in the importance of robust debate in a democracy, where the opposition is tasked with holding the government accountable. He also highlighted Gandhi’s growing influence as a youth leader, underscoring his appeal among young people across the country, which Sinha described as a rare and significant phenomenon.
The TMC MP’s remarks come amidst continued discussions in Parliament over key national issues, with both the ruling party and opposition sharpening their rhetoric. Gandhi’s statements have sparked both support and criticism, but Sinha's defense reinforces the idea that parliamentary criticism, especially from the opposition, is an essential component of democratic functioning.
