Amid a political storm over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks at a U.S. event regarding the functioning of the Election Commission of India, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has stepped in to defend his party colleague, asserting that speaking the truth is not the same as defaming the country.

“He talks truth, it is not to malign,” Dikshit said, responding to BJP accusations that Gandhi’s comments on foreign soil were aimed at tarnishing India’s democratic image. “People from outside countries also know what is happening here. India, for that matter, has been an example of democracy.”

Highlighting what he described as irregularities, Dikshit raised concerns about the transparency of the electoral process. “What the Election Commission is doing—number of voters suddenly increases, and votes go to the BJP—these are pertinent questions,” he noted.

He went on to argue that it is natural for a democratic leader to raise alarm when democracy appears to be under threat. “If there are big questions related to danger to the democracy, any democratic leader would talk... The BJP construes it as conspiracy. What is the problem in answering effectively?” he asked.

Dikshit concluded by saying, “People comment like this when they fear the truth,” framing the BJP’s reaction as a deflection from the real issues raised by Gandhi.
