New Delhi: In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly elections, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has criticized the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) recent announcement of the 'Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana,' labeling it a politically motivated move aimed at garnering votes.
The scheme, unveiled by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, promises a monthly honorarium of ₹18,000 to Hindu temple priests and Sikh gurdwara granthis in Delhi. Kejriwal stated that this initiative is a first in the country, aiming to support religious leaders who have traditionally carried forward rituals across generations. Registration for the scheme commenced on December 31, 2024, with Kejriwal personally inaugurating the process at the Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place.
Dikshit, however, has raised concerns about the timing and sincerity of the announcement. He argues that such a scheme should have been introduced earlier, rather than just before the elections, suggesting that it serves as a distraction from the AAP government's shortcomings. Dikshit also highlighted that many clerics have not received their due salaries for the past 1.5 years, questioning the feasibility of implementing the new scheme when existing obligations remain unmet.
Furthermore, Dikshit criticized Chief Minister Atishi's recent letter to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) concerning the demolition of religious structures. He contends that the AAP lacks control or understanding of the issue and is merely attempting to appeal to specific voter bases without demonstrating genuine commitment. Dikshit perceives these actions as indicative of a party desperate to regain favor amid declining public support.
