New Delhi | Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ameeque Jamei sharply criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Act following the Supreme Court hearing petitions challenging its legality. Jamei voiced concerns over rising tension in the country, asserting that the bill was passed in a controversial manner.
“There is tension across the country, because of the way the Waqf (Amendment) bill was passed,” Jamei said, referencing the recent Supreme Court proceedings. “Yesterday, the comments made by Chief Justice were a slap on the central government’s face.”
Jamei also reiterated concerns raised by Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav in Parliament, particularly about the potential misuse of the law. “90 per cent of land is Waqf by users, and those are graveyards, schools, colleges, Islamic schools, and mosques. BJP has an eye on those lands and wants to acquire them,” he alleged.
Referring to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Jamei pointed out that the UP CM had even instructed district magistrates via video conferencing to act on these lands.
The Samajwadi Party spokesperson emphasized the party's hope for a favorable Supreme Court ruling, stating, “We are hoping that we will get relief through the Supreme Court’s decision,” signaling their continued legal battle against the controversial Act.
