Kupwara, J&K: In Kupwara, J&K, Sajad Gani Lone, President of the J&K People's Conference and victorious candidate from the Handwara Assembly seat, addressed his supporters about the stark contrast between his previous term and the current political landscape. "The last time I was elected from here, I went to India's most empowered and powerful assembly. Today, unfortunately, after what happened here on August 5, I am going to India's weakest assembly," he stated.

Lone highlighted the implications of the changes that occurred on August 5, referring to the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, which has significantly altered the region's political dynamics. He emphasized the need to advocate for statehood, stating, "We will fight for statehood on the floor of the assembly and wherever possible."

He also extended a request to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), urging them to cease their political "experiments" in the region. "You never know which new beast is created here because of their experiments," he warned, suggesting that the BJP's actions could have unforeseen consequences for the state. Lone's comments reflect the ongoing tensions in J&K politics and the commitment of local leaders to restore the region's autonomy and voice.
