Amritsar: Former Punjab Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Daljit Singh Cheema reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs. Speaking in Amritsar, Cheema emphasized the SAD’s tradition of following the decisions of the Akal Takht, including religious penalties or 'tankhah' for misconduct.

"Earlier also we have said that Sri Akal Takht Sahib is supreme for us. We have always followed the orders of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Today also we will follow the ‘tankhah' (religious punishment for misconduct) and we respect the decisions of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib," said Cheema.

The comments come amid discussions within the Sikh community about the importance of adhering to the directives of the Akal Takht, which has historically played a pivotal role in guiding the religious and moral conduct of Sikhs.

Cheema’s statement underscores the SAD’s enduring allegiance to the Akal Takht, highlighting its centrality in maintaining discipline and unity within the community. By reiterating their respect and adherence to its rulings, Cheema emphasized the significance of the Akal Takht as a cornerstone of Sikh governance and spirituality.

The reaffirmation is expected to resonate strongly with the Sikh electorate, reinforcing the SAD’s stance as a party rooted in Sikh values and traditions. As the political landscape in Punjab evolves, the acknowledgment of the Akal Takht’s authority remains a cornerstone of SAD's ideological identity.
