Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Monday criticised the opposition for preventing a felicitation ceremony in Parliament for Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS). Rijiju said it has been a long-standing tradition of Parliament to honour citizens who achieve significant milestones for the country.
Referring to Captain Shukla’s recent achievement, the minister underlined that his journey to the ISS marked a historic step for India in space exploration. He said the recognition should also extend to the scientists of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who contributed to the mission’s success. Rijiju described the accomplishment as a critical milestone in India’s aspiration to become a developed nation by 2047 under the vision of “Viksit Bharat.”
