Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday reaffirmed her government’s commitment to ensuring dignified housing for the city’s economically weaker sections as she inspected the deteriorating EWS flat complex in Bhalswa-Jahangirpuri. The site, where nearly 7,400 flats were completed in 2016, has remained unoccupied for close to a decade, a situation Gupta described as a “serious betrayal” of thousands of poor families still awaiting permanent homes.
During her visit, the Chief Minister expressed strong disapproval of what she termed as years of administrative neglect by the previous government. She said the condition of the unused flats was a glaring example of poor planning and a failure to address Delhi’s longstanding housing shortage.
Gupta interacted with officials on-site, directing them to conduct a fresh assessment of the structural and service-related requirements needed to make the flats habitable. She stressed that her priority was to ensure that any pending work, including water supply, sanitation, and electrical infrastructure, is completed swiftly and transparently.
