Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid heartfelt tributes to renowned poet, environmentalist, and human rights advocate Sugathakumari during an event marking the conclusion of her 90th birthday celebrations.

"Poets are inherently compassionate and empathetic. When a poet channels this compassion beyond verse to effect real societal changes, a sensitive soul like Sugathakumari emerges," said Singh.

He highlighted Sugathakumari's profound understanding of the power of poetry in uniting people for a common good and praised her relentless dedication to selfless service.

"As her 90th birthday celebrations come to an end, it is important to reflect on her remarkable legacy and the relevance of her campaign for environment, conservation, and climate change. Her warnings about ecological changes decades ago have become stark realities today," he remarked, citing the devastating 2018 floods and recent Wayanad landslides in Kerala as reminders of environmental fragility.
