Delhi: The proposed legislation seeking removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers facing serious criminal charges has drawn sharp reactions from the Opposition. Congress MP Rajeev Shukla on Wednesday expressed concern that the measure could be used selectively against Opposition leaders, potentially destabilising governments.
Shukla remarked that there is apprehension among Opposition parties that Chief Ministers and ministers not aligned with the ruling establishment may be targeted under the provisions of the bill. This, he suggested, raises questions about the potential misuse of the law for political purposes.
At the same time, the Congress MP noted that the bill is expected to be referred to a Select Committee for further scrutiny. Parliamentary committees often serve as platforms for detailed examination of proposed legislation, where issues of scope, safeguards, and implications are debated before a final version is presented.
The bill has triggered a wider debate over accountability in public office and the balance between enforcing integrity and ensuring democratic fairness. While supporters of the measure argue that individuals facing serious criminal charges should not hold high constitutional positions, critics caution that the law must include safeguards to prevent political misuse.
