Sitamarhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday cautioned that the erosion of voting rights could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s poor, saying it could eventually lead to the loss of essential entitlements.
Addressing a public gathering in Sitamarhi, Gandhi said the issue goes beyond electoral participation. “This is not just about the right to vote, because if the vote is lost, then the poor people of India would have nothing left. This is starting with the vote, now vote is being taken away, then the ration card, land, and after that everything will be gone,” he told the crowd.
The Congress leader stressed that safeguarding voting rights was critical to protecting the broader rights of marginalized communities, who rely heavily on government schemes and social support systems. He framed the right to vote as the foundation upon which access to food security, land ownership, and other welfare benefits rests.
