New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday sharply criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that he appeared “mentally disturbed” and resorted to abusive language during a heated debate in Parliament. Gandhi’s remarks came after a contentious discussion in the Lok Sabha over Vande Mataram and the SIR (Status of India’s Residents) issue, which has become a fresh flashpoint between the government and the opposition.
Speaking to reporters after the session, Gandhi said, “There was an acrimonious discussion on Vande Mataram and SIR. Amit Shah appeared ‘mentally disturbed’ and even abused in the House as the entire structure involved in ‘vote theft’ was challenged.” He claimed that the opposition had cornered the government by questioning what it describes as systemic mechanisms that allegedly undermine the integrity of electoral rolls.
The debate saw high drama, with both sides trading accusations and Members frequently raising points of order. Opposition leaders asserted that the government was attempting to weaponise national symbols to deflect scrutiny, while the ruling BJP accused the Congress of lowering the dignity of the House through provocative remarks.
