Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of evading critical questions during his address in the Lok Sabha. Speaking to reporters after the session, Gandhi said the Home Minister’s reply was “completely defensive” and failed to address the concerns raised by the Opposition regarding electoral transparency and institutional accountability.
Gandhi said he had sought clarity on multiple issues, including the need for a transparent and verifiable voter list. “I said that a transparent voter list should be given, but he did not answer this,” he stated. He added that the Opposition had demanded access to the architecture of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to enhance public trust, yet Shah “did not say anything about it.”
The Congress leader also alleged irregularities involving BJP leaders voting outside their home states. “I said that BJP leaders are voting in Haryana and Bihar, but he did not say anything about that,” Gandhi claimed, adding that the Home Minister similarly avoided responding to concerns about the role of the Chief Justice of India in the context of electoral oversight.
Gandhi further remarked that the Election Commissioner enjoys “full immunity,” and reiterated the Opposition’s demand for greater transparency in the functioning of electoral institutions. He emphasised that these questions were raised to strengthen democratic processes, not to undermine them. “We are not scared,” he asserted, signalling that the Opposition would continue to press for reforms.
