Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident at the Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgaon, Goa, where a stampede during the annual pilgrimage claimed several lives and left many injured.
Taking to social media, Gandhi said, “The news of the death of several devotees and many injured in a stampede during the annual pilgrimage at the Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgaon, Goa, is very tragic. I express my deep condolences to all the bereaved families. At the same time, I hope for the speedy recovery of all the injured.”
The stampede occurred during a religious congregation that draws thousands of devotees every year to the historic temple. The exact cause of the crowd surge is still under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest that the situation escalated due to overcrowding and lack of crowd control measures.
