During his visit to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi voiced his strong support for conducting a caste census in India. He argued that 90% of the population is not connected with the existing system, despite having the necessary skills and talents.
Gandhi emphasized that a caste census is not merely a data collection exercise but a critical foundation for creating effective policies. He pointed out the necessity of understanding how wealth is distributed across different communities and ensuring the representation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits, and workers in important sectors like bureaucracy, judiciary, and media.
He also noted that BJP leaders have indicated support for providing an OBC section after the caste census and reiterated the Congress party's demand for a comprehensive list of different communities to inform inclusive and equitable policymaking.
