Kharagpur: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), a critical wing of Indian Railways, bears significant responsibility for passenger safety, freight security, and crime prevention. However, the demanding nature of their work often exposes RPF personnel to high levels of mental and physical stress, impacting both their performance and personal lives.
Speaking at the RPF Zonal Training Institute in Kharagpur, Dr. A. N. Jha, IG-Director of RPF, shed light on the mental health challenges faced by RPF personnel and the steps needed to address them. He emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying causes, such as excessive workload, exposure to dangerous situations, and the stress of balancing family and professional responsibilities.
Key symptoms of mental health issues among personnel include depression, anxiety, fear, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and physical ailments. These challenges not only hinder their professional efficiency but also affect their overall quality of life.
Dr. Jha outlined a comprehensive approach to tackle these issues, focusing on:
- Mental Health Awareness Programs: Educating personnel about mental health and its importance.
- Counseling Services: Providing access to professional mental health counseling in a confidential and supportive environment.
- Support at Work: Enhancing job support systems and promoting a culture of mutual care.
- Physical Fitness: Encouraging regular physical activities to reduce stress and boost morale.
- Work-Life Balance: Implementing policies for adequate vacations and personal time.
- Family Support Programs: Offering assistance to families to reduce stress and create a supportive home environment.
"The mental well-being of RPF personnel is vital for their effectiveness and the safety of our railways. By implementing these measures, we can ensure their mental health improves, allowing them to perform their duties with excellence," Dr. Jha concluded.
The emphasis on mental health underscores the commitment of the Indian Railways to the welfare of its personnel, ensuring they remain resilient in the face of growing challenges.
