President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday highlighted the growing global recognition of Indian craftsmanship and urged artisans across the country to focus on securing unique Geographical Indication (GI) tags for their products. She said that India’s artisans, through their knowledge, talent and perseverance, have carved out a distinct identity worldwide, and the next step should be to formally protect and promote that identity.
Addressing a gathering of craftspeople and industry representatives, the President said that India’s traditional arts, handlooms and handicrafts represent centuries of cultural heritage and collective wisdom. She noted that while many Indian products have already earned GI tags, thousands of unique crafts and indigenous practices still await official recognition.
“Indian craftsmen, through their knowledge, dedication and hard work, have established their global identity. Now they should focus on obtaining a unique GI tag for their products,” President Murmu said. She added that GI certification not only protects traditional craftsmanship from imitation but also ensures that artisans receive fair value for their work.
