Delhi: The assault on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing at her Civil Lines residence has triggered sharp criticism from the Opposition, with Congress MP Pramod Tiwari describing it as a serious security lapse. He linked the incident to broader concerns about crimes against women in the capital and placed responsibility on the Union Home Ministry.

According to reports, the Chief Minister was meeting citizens at her regular “Jan Sunwai” programme when a man, identified as a 42-year-old from Rajkot, allegedly approached her with a complaint and then attempted to pull her towards him. Gupta sustained a light blow to the head before security personnel intervened and detained the accused. She was later declared stable after medical examination.

Tiwari said that the incident highlighted ongoing threats to women’s safety in Delhi and questioned how ordinary women could feel secure if even the city’s Chief Minister was vulnerable during an official programme. He termed the episode “sad and unfortunate” and urged accountability from the Government of India and the Home Ministry, under whose jurisdiction the Delhi Police functions.

Delhi Police Commissioner S.B.K. Singh has since visited the Chief Minister’s residence, and officials are analysing CCTV footage to determine the sequence of events. The suspect remains in custody, and investigators are examining his motives.
