New Delhi: Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Friday responded sharply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks that the Congress had once gone as far as taxing children’s toffees. Tiwari accused the government of diverting public attention from pressing issues through such statements.
“When Modi ji became Prime Minister, he imposed so many taxes and his government looted heavily. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly said this is a ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’,” Tiwari told reporters, reiterating the Congress’s longstanding criticism of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system.
The Prime Minister, while addressing a gathering earlier this week, had alleged that previous Congress governments burdened citizens with taxes on everyday items, including children’s sweets. The remark has since triggered political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
Tiwari maintained that the real concerns of people, including inflation and unemployment, are being overshadowed by such remarks. He insisted that the government should focus on providing relief to citizens rather than, in his words, “shifting the narrative.”
